Trumpeter Swan 01

Trumpeter Swan 01

Description : By the end of the nineteenth century, the trumpeter swan was nearly extinct in North America. Today, some 3,000 of these birds nest in Alaska, and winter in coastal lakes and rivers in British Columbia as far south as Vancouver Island.
Trumpeter swans are large white birds, the males, or cobs, averaging 11.8 kg, the females slightly smaller. With a wingspan of up to 2.5 m, they are powerful flyers and capable of speeds up to 80 km/h in flight. Once mated, trumpeters usually remain together for life.
For their nests, they appropriate the tops of muskrat lodges almost exclusively.
