Pukaskwa National Park, Ontario, Canada 02

Pukaskwa National Park, Ontario, Canada 02

Description : There are many spellings of the word - Pukaskwa - and many legends about the meaning of the word.
Sources at the Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre in Timmins indicate that the correct Roman orthography for Pukaskwa should be Pukasu. In the past, native people were given names because of their deeds. The word Pukasu describes what people do when they cook the marrow inside the bones of animals.
Pukaskwa challenges the modern explorer to paddle its turbulent spring rivers or its wild coast. A challenging coastal hiking trail runs the length of the park. Backpackers can arrange to be dropped off or picked up by boat at one end of the trail.
