Gambo, Newfoundland, Canada 07

Gambo, Newfoundland, Canada 07

Description : Joey Smallwood was the premier of Newfoundland from the time of Newfoundland’s entry into the Confederacy of Canada in 1949 until 1972.

J. R. Smallwood was born in Gambo, Newfoundland, a small logging community at the head of Freshwater Bay, Bonavista Bay, on December 24, 1900. At Mint Brook, a small hamlet surrounding a thriving sawmill operation under J.J. (“Gambo Jack”) Murphy, Smallwood lived but three months before moving with his parents back to St. John’s. If the story ended there, then Gambo and Newfoundland would not be the community it is today. As fate would have it, when Smallwood began his campaign in 1946 to make Newfoundland and Labrador a part of Canada, he chose Gambo as the place to kick-off that campaign, claiming that he was but a little fellow from Gambo and insisting that everyone call him Joey. Smallwood went on to gain election to the National Convention that debated the issue of Confederation with Canada and once Newfoundland became a province of Canada Smallwood became the member for the provincial legislature representing Gambo as part of the district of Bonavista. For the rest of his political career and life Smallwood identified himself with Gambo and became Gambo’s most famous native son.
