Description : Northwest Coast society, with its secure economy, developed hierarchical chiefdoms in which chiefs, nobles and commoners were classed according to wealth and heredity. This was particularly evident among northern groups, such as the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. Outside these classes were the slaves, usually prisoners of war, but sometimes persons who had lost their status, often because of debt. In any event, they had no rights at all.
