Description : The crust of lichens found on most of the rocks is even slower-growing. The yellow-green speckled lichen is a kind of map lichen, which can be some of the oldest living things on the planet. Individuals growing in the arctic can be many thousands of years old. Map lichens grow so slowly that they can sometimes be used by geologists to age the rocks that they are growing on!
