White Artic Wolves, Toronto Zoo, Ontario, Canada 03

White Artic Wolves, Toronto Zoo, Ontario, Canada 03

Description : Their face is larger and less pointed and ears are more rounded. The tail is long, bushy and black tipped and acts as a balancing organ. They are digitate and have non-retractable claws. Five toes on the fore feet and four toes on the hind feet. They have high sense of smell and hearing, but not keen eye sight. They can see shapes in the distance but often do not recognize an object until they are close enough to smell it. The large skull is heavily constructed with large teeth, thick 5 cm long canines and widely spaced large premolars. Teeth are covered when the mouth is closed. Moults once a year in the spring. The short summer fur grows into the long silky winter coat, while the soft under fur grows in the fall. Their naked footpads are protected by stiff tufts of hair which grow between their toes in winter.
The arctic wolves follow the migrating caribou for distances of over 500 km from the arctic tundra in summer to the boreal woods in winter.
