St.Mary's Cathedral, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada 04

St.Mary's Cathedral, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada 04

Description : In 1801 Father Edmund Burke submitted a report to Rome, requesting that Nova Scotia be made a diocese separate from Quebec. In 1817, Rome declared Nova Scotia a Vicariate Apostolic, and construction of St. Mary’s Cathedral began in 1820. It was known at that time to have the tallest polished granite spire in the world. Most of the funds required for purchase of the land and the construction of this church were loans from the Charitable Irish Society and from Indian chiefs in the local area.
