Description : In 1943, when Reid was twenty-three years old, he visited Skidegate that is a village of Haida Gwaii. Haida Gwaii the area of First Nations’ residence that is known as Queen Charlotte Islands. He met his maternal grandfather, Charles Gladstone there. Charles Gladstone was one of a very few Haida artists who were producing to sell silver and argillite works with artistic tradition of Haida. During the time of visiting, Reid saw and toughed the tools for carving that were left for his grandfather by great Haida artist, Charles Edenshaw (1839-1924). Charles Edenshaw was Charles Gladstone’s uncle, and created many works with using woods, silvers and other precious metals as materials.
