Spirit Of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe,
by Bill Reid, Vancouver Airport, British Columbia, Canada CM11-03

Description : Commenting on where this boat may be heading, Bill Reid says:

There is certainly no lack of activity in our little boat, but is there any purpose? Is the tall figure who may or may not be the Spirit of Haida Gwaii leading us, for we are all in the same boat, to a sheltered beach beyond the rim of the world as he seems to be or is he lost in a dream of his own dreaming? The boat moves on, forever anchored in the same place.

Inspired by 19 th century argillite carvings of miniature canoes thronging with animal and human passengers, Reid constructed a 1/6-scale clay model of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii in the spring of 1986. He then enlarged the Haida canoe carrying 13 mythological Haida figures to a full-scale clay model, before the sculpture was cast in plaster over an armature of steel rod and mesh for further refinement.

This maquette was shipped to the Tallix Foundry in Beacon, New York, in 1989, where it was cast in bronze (the original plaster is on view at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Québec). The casting was given a glossy black patina to give the appearance of argillite. The Spirit of Haida Gwaii was completed and installed in 1991. Subtitled The Black Canoe, it is Bill Reid’s largest and most complex work of sculpture. The Spirit of Haida Gwaii is a monumental sculpture in bronze: 6.05 m long, 3.9 m high, 3.5 m wide, weighing 4,900 kg.
