Ninstints Totem Poles, Haida Gwaii, Gwaii Haanas National Park, British Columbia, Canada CM11-07

Description : Ninstints is a world heritage site and some care has been taken to keep these poles standing. Because of this, it remains the best preserved Haida village site, though one of the most remote and difficult to access. Anthony Island is at the south end of Moresby Island and west of Kunghit Island. The west and south side of the island are open to the Pacific. It is one of the few islands of the southern Queen Charlottes that is not particularly mountainous and forms the southern tip of the cordillera that forms the backbone of Moresby Island. The old Haida name of the village was Red-Cod Island Town; Ninstints was thought to be one of the latter Kunghit Haida chiefs to live there. The town became more commonly known to Europeans by his name. Ninstints was abandoned by 1878 after a series of smallpox plagues.
